YOUNG MEMBERS DEMAND BETTER PENSIONS

Date

Decision
Carried

Conference notes the results of the UNISON 2006 Young Members Survey, which demonstrated that the policy issue of greatest importance to our young members is improved pensions provision, which was rated as important or very important by 89% of UNISON young members.

Conference therefore expresses our great concern at recent and current attacks upon pension provision. We note for example that no young members will benefit from the transitional protection for the “Rule of 85” in the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS).

We do not accept that pension provision in the twenty first century should become less generous than it was in the twentieth century. We therefore instruct the Service Group Executive (SGE) to campaign, in conjunction with other Service Groups and the NEC, to secure improvements in the LGPS, including further improvements to the accrual rate, more generous commutation arrangements and reductions in early retirement factors.

We call for this campaign to be co-ordinated with other trade unions through the TUC.
