THE DISABILITY EQUALITY DUTY: EQUALITY IMPACT ASSESSMENTS

Back to all Motions

Conference
2007 Local Government Service Group Conference
Date
23 February 2007
Decision
Carried

This Conference congratulates the work undertaken by local government branches that have used the Disability Equality Duty to eliminate institutional discrimination in the workplace.

We are however concerned with reports that employers may not be meeting their new duties with regard to:

1)Identifying positive as well as negative outcomes especially in the recruitment of disabled people.

2)Assessing the impact of new policies upon disabled workers.

3)The unique features of the Disability Equality Duty when undertaking generic equality assessments.

4)Statutory obligations to involve disabled people in reviews of existing workplace policies and prioritisation of remedial work.

We call upon the Local Government Service Group Executive to work with the National Disabled Members Committee to issue guidance to branches to help them raise the above issues with their employers.
