Black members’ Training schools for Black workers

Conference
2007 National Black Members' Conference
Date

Decision
Carried

Conference notes that we need to provide better access to Black members for a range of training but especially in relation to raising their political awareness.

Many of the delegates to our National Black Members Conference have had limited if any opportunity to engage in political debate in terms of race; we don’t seem to have the time within the tight time frame of our conference to ensure that happens.

Conference believes each region should be in a position to provide on a quarterly basis access to Black members who are already active as a trade unionist but have limited political awareness.

By raising the political awareness and skills of Black activists we will become more effective in challenging race discrimination faced within and external to our union.

Conference asks that the National Black Members’ Committee (NBMC) seeks to:

1)provide a ‘training school’ event for delegates at each National Black Members’ Conference;

2)encourage Regional Black Members Committees to seek support from the regions to work with them to provide quarterly Black members’ training schools on race and politics;

3)seek to work with the National Executive Council to ensure regions include in Regional Business Plans a commitment to fund the provision of these quarterly Black members’ training schools.
