Pension Holidays

Conference
2006 National Women's Conference
Date
26 October 2005
Decision
Carried

Conference recognises that pension holidays taken by employers and without consultation have caused a deficiency in public service pension funds. Many women rely on their private pensions to top up the state pension, as many will not qualify for the full state pension, putting many women below the poverty line in retirement. Conference believes that the consequences of this action, and shortfall in pension contributions by the employer, discriminate against women.

Conference calls on the National Women’s Committee to:

1)ascertain the effects of pension holidays on women’s pensions;

2)campaign so members’ pension funds are reimbursed to the full amount with bonuses and thereby preventing financial hardship for women in their retirement years.
