Conference is pleased to acknowledge UNISON’s recent increase in the childcare and dependency allowance to £32 per day.

In the current financial climate Conference’s concern is that this does not reflect the true cost of childcare in many parts of the country, especially in the south east of England where the cost of living is on a par and sometimes exceeds that of Greater London.

The provision of childcare is essential in ensuring the participation of women at all levels of our union. Conference is very concerned that the national and regional childcare/dependency allowances, where they do not meet the actual costs, will act as a barrier and deterrent to women becoming actively involved in UNISON.

Conference calls on the National Women’s Committee to:

1)conduct a national survey of the costs of childcare;

2)refer findings to the National Executive Council for consultation on regional childcare allowances;

3)report back to regional women’s committees/groups within six months.
