Defend a Woman’s Right to Choose

Conference agrees that access to birth control and abortion is crucial for women’s equality.

The 2005 general election campaign saw unprecedented attacks on a woman’s right to choose, and the anti-choice lobby is adopting increasingly aggressive tactics to seek to restrict abortion rights.

In particular, the sensationalist focus on later abortion is designed to confuse public and political opinion and to win support for incremental restrictions.

Conference notes that government statistics show that in fact only two per cent of abortions take place after 20 weeks, and they are needed by women who face difficult and exceptional circumstances.

Conference calls upon the National Women’s Committee to:

1)work with the National Executive Council in lobbying the government to ensure that there are no further restrictions on access to abortion;

2)continue to support the work of abortion rights in campaigning in defence of a woman’s right to choose.
