CARE OF THE ELDERLY

Back to all Motions

Conference
2006 Retired Members' Conference
Date
16 June 2006
Decision
Carried

Conference calls upon the National Executive Council to campaign for improvement in the monitoring of the quality of care for the elderly, disabled and chronically sick delivered by all providers. The malnutrition and abuse of the elderly must be eradicated, and the valuable work done by carers recognised.

Conference also calls for the re-affirmation of UNISON’s commitment to the values of the Right to Care campaign by demanding the provision by the Government of the £1 billion needed to provide free social and nursing care. The ‘pay as you go’ policy is to be deplored and the proposal to allow homes to ‘opt out’ of the resuscitation of the elderly should be rejected.

Conference calls for an end to the Government’s ‘pay as you go’ that attacks those most vulnerable in society, at a time in their lives when they need support not harassment.
