Police Staff Discipline

Police Staff Service Group Conference 2006
14 July 2006

This Conference notes that the issue of Police Staff discipline has been discussed at previous conferences and still needs clarification. It also notes that they are often treated like criminals on occasion resulting in unnecessary stress and distress.

Frequently criminal and discipline investigations overlap with privileged information being released into the discipline arena without the protection of legal representation. It also notes that this information would not be provided to other employers unless required to do so by law, nor is it reflected in the grade.

Conference is also concerned that some forces act on recorded crime no matter how minor and/or expect Police Staff to volunteer this information.

Conference therefore instructs the Service Group Executive to:

1)obtain and provide the legal advice and guidance to branches as agreed at the 2005 Police Staff Conference;

2)obtain and provide legal advice to branches on the legality of Police Authorities being provided with privileged information obtained in criminal investigations;

3)obtain and provide legal advice on the requirement for Police Staff to volunteer any criminal sanctions no matter how minor.
