Pensions

Conference
2006 Local Government Service Group Conference
Date
24 February 2006
Decision
Carried as Amended

Conference notes that while UNISON has campaigned hard for the defence of the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS), pensions remains an issue which is difficult to raise effectively among young members.

Conference also notes that this is undoubtedly in part due to the prospect of a long-term investment of a significant element of income to secure a pension whose promised benefits can be reduced on the whim of employers or Government.

This Conference believes that a decent pension scheme is an essential part of any reward package, and that the only way present provision can be defended effectively long-term is through organising around it as an issue at all levels of the union. This includes engaging directly with new entrants to local government – and particularly young members – on the importance of the LGPS and fighting to defend it for future as well as existing members.

Conference calls on the Local Government Service Group Executive to:

1)provide all branches with easy to understand information about the benefits of the LGPS for distribution to all members and prospective members, along with information about forecasts on the projected future value of the basic state pension scheme;

2)provide all branches with advice on what information the employer is expected to provide to new employees;

3)consult with the young members in local government on how to best to promote the LGPS to young members.
