Conference welcomes the ongoing work and consultation regarding women’s participation in the LGBT self organised group following motions carried at the 2005 LGBT Conference.
Conference recognises that the time scale of a year was not sufficient to ensure a comprehensive and inclusive consultation took place which included the views of LGBT women who are not necessarily currently involved in LGBT self organisation.
Conference also recognises that Black and Disabled women may face additional barriers including within LGBT and women’s self organisation.
Conference endorses the work already carried out by the National LGBT Committee on proportionality and fair representation, increasing positive LGBT women’s participation, safe space and accessible and inclusive social events. This includes:
1.Responding to the UNISON consultation on fair representation and proportionality;
2.Consulting with regional co-convenors on barriers to participation of LGBT women and safe space;
3.Submitting a motion to National Women’s Conference on LGBT women’s participation (which was successfully carried);
4.Issuing guidance to branches and regions on fair representation and proportionality when agreeing delegations to LGBT Conference;
5.Including articles in Out in UNISON;
6.The production of a comprehensive consultation paper launched at the 2006 LGBT Conference.
Conference therefore instructs the National LGBT Committee to continue its work in this area and report back to the 2007 LGBT Conference.
This work will include:
A.Organising a campaign encouraging women to get involved in LGBT groups;
B.Targeting occupational groups such as nursing support staff, home carers etc;
C.Ensuring publicity and promotional materials and activities around the development of the LGBT group are designed to increase women’s participation.
