Palestine – No Pride in Occupation

Back to all Motions

Conference
2006 National LGBT Conference
Date
25 July 2006
Decision
Carried

Conference recalls the resolutions on Palestine of the Twelfth UNISON Lesbian & Gay Conference and the First UNISON Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Conference. It reaffirms those decisions but regrets to note how little progress has been made to carry them out. Conference instructs the National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender (LGB&T) Committee to review these resolutions when it formulates its Conference Action Plan 2007.

Conference notes the continuing Zionist influence upon sections of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender communities in the United Kingdom particularly the unbalanced article, “Lives in Hiding” in Gay Times, March 2006, which joined the chorus attacking the legitimacy of the Palestinian parliamentary elections of 25th January and included only a single passing reference to the Israeli occupation.

Conference welcomes the opportunity, at National Delegate Conference 2006, for LGBT delegates to meet the delegation from the Palestine General Federation of Trades Unions (PGFTU). It notes with regret, but accepts as realistic, their assessment they are likely to have few early opportunities to promote discussion about LGBT human rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

Conference therefore instructs the National LGBT Committee to:

1.Continue to work with the UNISON International Department to maintain links with PGFTU so that LGBT issues can be raised in the context of UNISON’s work on Palestine generally; and,

2.Develop work with the Palestine Solidarity Campaign to help it to build membership and support among the LGBT communities and to foster direct links with LGBT Palestinians.
