Are Retired LGBT Members Invisible

Back to all Motions

Conference
2006 National LGBT Conference
Date
16 May 2006
Decision
Carried

This Conference is concerned that when LGBT members retire from the workplace they become invisible and therefore sidelined. Many of them will have been active within the union movement and taken part in major campaigns. The dynamism shown by UNISONS own LGBT section is proof of what its membership is capable of. Many of the improvements gained by LGBT members during the last few years have been as a direct result of their abilities and desire to win. This Conference feels their skills are too valuable to lose and urges the National Committee of UNISON’s LGBT Section to be even more proactive in encouraging other branches and regional groups to use the skills of retired members by retaining them as active retired members wherever possible. LGBT members possess skills beyond LGBT issues alone. This should be realised and utilised and this Conference urges the National LGBT Committee to highlight what major resources UNISON may be losing.
