We welcomed the launch of the code of conduct for Healthcare Assistants, which was called for at the 2005 HCA conference. The National Nursing Sector recognises the significance that regulation plays in acknowledging the vital contribution, which HCA make to patient care and the health care team. However the subject of regulation for HCA dates back almost 8 year to the De-montford report. Whilst we recognise the linkage of reviewing this in light of the review of non medical regulation it is important that we do not loose the momentum or the confidence of this group of staff. 82% of HCA who responded to our survey stated that they wished to be regulated.

We therefore call on the SGE and Nursing Sector to: –

1. Write to the Secretary of State and Director of Human Resources outlining the case for regulation and expressing the views of our 90,000 HCA in membership.

2. Build the 2006 HCA conference on the back of our successful campaign.
