This conference is extremely alarmed at the concept of “contestability” being introduced into mainstream NHS mental health services. Whilst we acknowledge that the voluntary sector currently provides some services such as advocacy and service user representation, we are convinced that the majority of mainstream mental health services should continue to be provided by the statutory sector.
We therefore request that the Health Group Executive place this issue as one of their priorities for the forthcoming year. Mental health services are often seen as the Cinderella of the NHS and it would be a catastrophe if the move to contestability, where it occurs, is not challenged effectively by UNISON.
