Black Members and the Workforce Remodelling Agenda

2006 National Black Members' Conference

A real opportunity is with us to radically change how we as black workers are valued in the public sector.

Workforce remodelling is being pursued in all areas of the services that we provide but how are the rights and professional development needs of black workers being considered?

Many black members in UNISON are still amongst the lowest paid in the union, have seen themselves continually overlooked for promotion, training and continuous professional opportunities when compared to and with their white peers.

Therefore Conference calls upon:-

The NBMC to work with the NEC to request all branches and regional structures use the negotiating and job evaluation schemes to ensure that monitoring and scrutiny of black staff is explicit during the remodelling approach using the following range of actions:-

1.Identify amongst their stewards and convenor groups how many have raised the issue of racial inequality between black and white staff in terms of pay, conditions and access to training;

2. Request from their employer an update as to how the in-balance amongst black workers at all levels in their organisation is being addressed within the context of remodelling;

3.Develop a process for sharing successful outcomes in terms of remodelling for black staff amongst and across the whole union.
