Conference notes the increasingly low number of Black disabled people in employment. Recent statistics have highlighted that Black and Minority Ethnic staff make up a large proportion of low paid staff.

It is well-known that disabled people are disadvantaged in the work place and that Black disabled workers are suffering a double disadvantage.

Recent studies have highlighted that amongst low paid employees there are poorer standards of health and safety in the workplace. This has led to a significant increase in workplace accidents and a steadily increasing level of industrial injuries.

The general lack of adequate public transport prevents many disabled people from being able to access employment all together.

Disability equality schemes are currently being produced and implemented in the workplace; such schemes will provide UNISON members with a toolkit to bargain for equality and fairness in the workplace, in the same way as race equality schemes.

Conference calls upon the NBMC to work with the NEC, the National Disabled Members’ Committee and service groups to campaign to increase the number of Black disabled people in employment.
