RETAINING OLDER MEMBERS AND ACTIVISTS

Back to all Motions

Conference
Lesbian,Gay,Bisexual & Transgender Conference 2005
Date
29 July 2005
Decision
Carried as Amended

Conference notes that the proportion of delegates at UNISON Lesbian and Gay Conferences aged 50 and over was about 10% whereas about 30% of UNISON members are in this age group. Moreover, this showed little change from year to year and was reflected in membership of the National lesbian and gay Committee and, as far as is known, of branch and regional Lesbian and Gay groups.

Conference is concerned that this appears to show that the self-organised group failed to retain members and activists till the end of their working lives let alone into retirement.

Conference instructs the National LGBT Committee to:

1.Consult widely, including as far as possible with those who have dropped out of activity, on how to retain activists in future;

2.Report with recommendations to next year’s Conference.
