Social Worker Registration

Back to all Motions

Conference
2005 National Disabled Members' Conference
Date
8 June 2005
Decision
Carried as Amended

Social workers are now required to register with the General Social Care Council in order to practice legally, and this registration has to be renewed every three years. In so doing they have to complete extensive registration documents that amongst other things ask personal questions within a medical declaration that includes disability status. When completing this section some UNISON disabled members have reported they feel vulnerable and potentially open to victimisation and discrimination.

Therefore, Conference instructs the National Disabled Members’ Committee to ask the National Executive Council and local government and health service groups to monitor if any members of UNISON, whilst trying to register with the General Social Care Council as a social care worker, experience any difficulty in obtaining registration because of their declared disability status and if so, not only to ensure UNISON members are not discriminated against in this process but also to instruct the National Disabled Members’ Committee to campaign for a registration process that is barrier-free.
