UNISON’s leaflet on Work Life Balance is probably one of the most important documents produced by UNISON, especially for women. Balancing work and family is one of the most important issues facing women today in the 21st century.
The norm of yesterday is not always consistent with the reality of today and possible future trends. We are being constantly bombarded with statistics around single parents and divorce rates. The workforce is more diverse than ever so it is important that the changing demands of workers, especially women, are recognised by employers.
Women are less prepared to accept the detrimental impact work can have on family life. Conference calls upon the National Women’s Committee to:
1)work to ensure the Work Life Balance leaflet is disseminated to all areas of UNISON;
2)involve women members in the debate through the provision of detailed information on their rights;
3)support women to negotiate locally for more flexible working practices, practices that benefit women rather than providing economical benefits to employers;
4)involve regional women’s committees in identifying different ways of working and the different ways women have successfully organised themselves to juggle their commitments to their work and their families.
