Conference
2004 National Women's Conference
Date
15 October 2003
Decision
Carried

Conference notes and applauds the excellent work taking place in regional women’s groups to promote women’s organisation. Regional groups have used a diverse range of activities to encourage, educate and motivate many women into activity including seminars, guest speakers, workshops and international events.

Conference however notes that whilst some branch women’s groups are flourishing it is generally more difficult to establish and maintain activity at the branch level. Conference recognises the vital importance of establishing women’s organisation at this grass roots level as it is often many women’s first experience of union activity and it is a great way to build confidence, experience and the skills to develop further within the union.

Therefore Conference calls on the National Women’s Committee to:

1)work with regional women’s groups to map the level of women’s organisation in branches. Where activity is low, barriers to effective organisation should be identified and strategies should be incorporated to a wide-ranging action plan at national and regional level to improve organisation;

2)produce guidance on the role of branch women’s officers and branch organisation;

3)work with the other self-organised groups to update Get Yourself Organised, UNISON’s guidelines on self-organisation.
