Centralisation of Bus Management

2004 Transport Service Group Conference
27 February 2003

Conference notes with concern the trend towards the centralisation of ‘white collar’ jobs in the largest of the multi-national bus companies such as Firstgroup, Stagecoach and Arriva.

Conference regards these trends as predictable consequences of the companies’ growth and diversification over the last ten years or so. The creation of centralised financial services and the emergence of corporate management approaches have led to a diminution of jobs at local bus company level and an increase at regional level and at newly created national centres/workplaces.

Conference instructs the Transport Service Group Executive and the Bus Sector Committee to:

i)Work with bus branches to protect jobs at local level;

ii)Maximise recruitment at local and national company levels;

iii)Continue to seek national UNISON recognition by bus companies.
