Conference
Police Staff Conference 2004
Date
26 February 2004
Decision
Carried as Amended

This Conference calls upon the Government to reconsider changes in the Local Government Pensions Scheme (LGPS) which may be detrimental to our members. Such changes include:

1)from April 2004, the right to a return of pensions contributions are to be removed and immediate ‘vesting’ of pension rights will be introduce;

2)from April 2005, increasing the earliest age at which benefits can be taken (other than on the grounds of ill health) from age 50 to 55;

3)from April 2005, removing the Scheme’s ’85 year rule’ for new members and phasing it out for existing members.

Therefore, this Conference calls upon the Service Group Executive to:

a)liaise with the Local Government Service Group in relation to any threats to our joint members pension entitlements;

b)to arrange to communicate the potential dangers of the changes to our Police Staff members;

c)request the police branches raise this issue locally with their employers and other key stakeholders;

d)ask branches to raise the issue with the relevant MPs also encourage members to do so.
