Conference notes:

1)the effective development and delivery of education provision for UNISON activists and potential activists at branch, region and national level across UNISON, which enables in the region of 10,000 activists a year to access training;

2)the successful roll out of training for a new stream of activists, union learning representatives and lifelong learning advisers via the establishing a culture of learning projects in England and Scotland and via union learning funded initiatives in Wales and Northern Ireland, which have as a whole so far recruited and trained around 2,000 learning reps and advisers, most of whom from groups currently under-represented within UNISON;

3)the steps which have been taken to develop new women activists via the pathways programme which links women’s development to branch development and organising initiatives.

Conference believes that the union’s organising agenda can only be achieved if all activists and potential activists can readily access suitable training which reflects the organising and recruitment priority of the union. To this end, Conference calls for the development of:

a)a flexible education and organising resource which can be used by branch- based lay tutors, branch organisers and organising staff to plan recruitment and organising campaigns around key issues in the branch;

b)branch officer training which highlights the organising and recruitment potential of new initiatives including the learning agenda and the pathways programme;

c)a system to enable more effective monitoring of access to activist education.
