TRADES UNION CONGRESS GENERAL COUNCIL

Back to all Motions

Conference
2004 National Lesbian & Gay Conference
Date
24 September 2004
Decision
Carried

Conference notes that, following earlier changes to secure the representation of black workers, in 2001 the Trades Union Congress General Council was further enlarged to include three new sections, H, I and J, representing respectively trades unionists with disabilities, lesbian and gay trades unionists and trades unionists under 27 years of age. In 2002 bisexual and transgender trades unionists were added to the definition of Section I.

Conference further notes that the issue of the equality seats has been the issue of lengthy debate within the Self-Organised Groups Liaison Committee and that the National Executive Council’s Policy Development and Campaigns Committee has agreed that UNISON will seek, in co-operation with other affiliates, that these seats are elected by the union’s delegates at the respective equality conferences rather than by those at congress (after consultation with those conferences) and that appropriate rule changes are brought forward.

Conference instructs the National Executive Council to put a firm proposal to this effect to the General Council within the next twelve months.

Conference further instructs the National Executive Council to include in its proposal that sections H, I and J each be enlarged to two seats in order to provide gender balance.
