SEXUAL ORIENTATION AND GENDER IDENTITY ISSUES IN THE HEALTH SERVICE

Back to all Motions

Conference
2004 National Lesbian & Gay Conference
Date
24 September 2004
Decision
Carried

Conference welcomes the work carried out by the Health Group on issues affecting lesbians and gay men but believes that bisexual and transgender issues have not received sufficient prominence. Conference notes, for example, that transgender health workers face particular pressures, especially when working in clinical environments (in both clinical and non-clinical posts).

Conference acknowledges therefore the need to promote an inclusive lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equalities agenda.

Conference therefore instructs the Service Group Executive to work with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members to ensure that its equalities work fully reflects issues of concern to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members.

This should include:

1.Negotiating for collective agreements at local and national level to include bisexual and transgender members;

2.Pressing employers and NHS bodies at national and local level to ensure that anti discrimination training covers bisexual and transgender members;

3.Training for UNISON stewards on workplace issues affecting bisexual and transgender members, including the impact of the Gender Recognition Act;

4.Tackling discrimination against bisexual and transgender people in NHS provision and the knock on effect this has on working conditions for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender workers;

5.The need for inclusive language when referring to the LGBT community and issues.
