Nurse Staffing Levels

Back to all Motions

Conference
2004 Health Care Service Group Conference
Date
24 December 2003
Decision
Carried

Conference recognises that Health Service Trusts are experiencing difficulty in recruiting and retaining Registered Nurses and Auxiliary Staff and increasingly depend on Bank and Agency Nursing staff to provide cover.

Furthermore Conference recognises that there is not an agreed National standard for nurse staffing levels with the exception of areas which require specialist practice.

Conference therefore calls on the Service Group Execuitve to enter into immediate discussions with Government to establish a minimum agreed nurse staffing level for wards or equivalent spheres of nursing.

This ultimately will assist Health Branches to clearly identify and monitor nurse staffing levels within the National Health Service.
