Keep the NHS Public

Back to all Motions

Conference
2004 Health Care Service Group Conference
Date
5 January 2004
Decision
Carried

This Conference is deeply disappointed that the Government won a narrow majority to establish Foundation Trusts. However it believes that the strong campaign of opposition led by UNISON at all levels of the organisation achieved significant concessions from the Government.

The NHS continues to face significant attacks from the privateers both within and outside of the Government not least PFI, LIFT and Diagnostic Treatment Centres.

The lessons from the campaign now need to be built upon under the banner of “Keep the NHS Public” and embedded firmly within UNISON’s overall Positively Public Campaign.

In continuing the “Keep the NHS Public” campaign the SGE should:

1.Work with Labour Link to lobby MPs and Ministers on behalf of a public NHS and in opposition to creeping privatisation;

2.Provide publicity and campaign materials to Regions and Branches;

3.Carry out and commission in depth research on Government initiatives in favour of privatisation and publicise this to branches.
