Discrimination on Grounds of Sexual Orientation – Policing the New Legislation

Back to all Motions

Conference
2004 Energy Service Group Conference
Date
27 February 2004
Decision
Carried

Conference notes:

i)That the long-awaited legislation protecting workers from discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation has now been in force for a number of months;

ii)That some equalities policies, such as the Centrica policy, already included sexual orientation, and others have now been amended.

However, Conference further notes that there is still much to be done to improve awareness amongst managers and workers, including those workers directly affected by the legislation, and to make the legislative and policy changes have any real impact on people’s working lives.

Conference welcomes the advice contained in the UNISON bargaining support guide ‘Negotiating Equality for Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Workers’, and calls on all energy branches to ensure they engage in the detailed negotiation, monitoring and publicity work set out in the guide.

Conference instructs the Energy Service Group Executive, working with the Business and Environment Equal Opportunities Working Group, to audit progress at both employer and branch level on negotiating effective changes in policy and practice on combating sexual orientation discrimination in the workplace.
