National Black Members’ Conference to be Held in November Each Year

Conference
2004 National Black Members' Conference
Date
30 October 2003
Decision
Carried

The Scottish Region notes with grave concern at the loss of opportunity to hold its annual delegate’s conference in the year 2003. It notes that while other self organised groups had the opportunity of producing policies for their national committees to operate on, the National Black Members’ Committee (NBMC) is disadvantaged in getting the policies to work on over three months late.

This could have been avoided, if conference had been foresighted and opposed the motion passed in 2001, which led to bring a change in the dates for the National Black Members’ Conference.

Whilst the Scottish Region sympathises with the views and logic, that led to the change. Yet nevertheless, the Scottish Region completely disagrees to make any such change permanent.

Natural changes in the lunar cycles, would not allow any festive occasion such as Eid – ul-Fitir, followed by the holy month of Ramadan – to take place in the month of November, until next decade. Because these festive occasion of high religious significance are based, on sighting of Moon.

The Scottish Region urges upon the Conference to:

1)vote in favour of holding the Black Members’ Conference in the month of November, each year;

2)ensure full participation of any faith that may be potentially disenfranchised, as a result of this change;

3)ensure that, NBMC’s selected dates for conference, and facilities made available at conference are sympathetic to the needs of all faiths.
