This Conference notes with concern the number of reserved seats vacant at regional and national level.
These reserved seats are restricted to women members earning less than a basic hourly rate of £5.90 (January 2001) to be uprated annually by the increase in median earnings as defined by the New Earnings Survey.
These seats are vital as they give a clear voice to the lowest paid women in UNISON.
Conference calls upon the National Women’s Committee to:
1)undertake a survey to find out the number of women members fulfilling the reserved seat criteria.
2)work with the National Executive Council and Service Group Executive in developing, organising and recruitment strategies to fill the reserved seats.
3)raise the profile of these seats in UNISON within the women’s self-organisation structures at all levels.
4)take action to identify pathways for these women to extend their contributions in UNISON wider structures.
