Carried as Amended

This Conference reaffirms its commitment to support UNISON’s campaign for a woman’s right to choose

In recent years there has been an upsurge of anti-abortion activity by so called “pro-life” campaigners. This has been aided and abetted by the popular media and misinformation about abortion.

Some NHS Trusts no longer offer abortion after 14 weeks, leading to the individual having to turn to private treatment. The average cost is £250 for an abortion in a private clinic.

It is therefore proposed:

1)UNISON raises the profile of its campaign for a woman’s right to choose;

2)The profile of abortion issues should be raised and highlighted to all UNISON members;

3)Comprehensive information is offered to members about their choices;

4)UNISON promotes easier access to safe abortion on the NHS for all women;

5)Advice on prevention and where to go for counselling to be available via the Healthpack.

6)To campaign for more sensitive treatment of patients undergoing abortion on gynaecological wards.
