Listening to Women

Back to all Motions

Conference
2003 National Women's Conference
Date
23 October 2002
Decision
Carried

Conference deplores the growing evidence of widespread islamaphobia in the UK and elsewhere. Conference notes that part of this distorted world view is the portrayal of Muslim women as passive victims. This narrow stereotype denies the diversity of Muslim women and ignores the long tradition of Muslim women’s organisation. Conference welcomes the example of the recently formed Safra Project – a project of and for Muslim lesbian, bisexual and transgender women, which is addressing issues of service provision for lesbian, bisexual and transgender Muslim women.

Conference believes the work of the Safra Project complements UNISON’s work on public services – the provision of public services accessible and appropriate to all. Conference calls on the National Women’s Committee to support the Safra Project, and liaise with the Positively Public Unit to circulate information about this project and other groups working in the field of delivery of appropriate and accessible services, publicising and promoting best practice.
