Car Jacking

Back to all Motions

Conference
2003 National Women's Conference
Date
18 October 2002
Decision
Carried as Amended

This Conference is alarmed at the rapid increase of car jacking incidents taking place, often against women drivers.

Many women are lone workers, collecting pensions and shopping for the elderly and housebound. This puts them at greater risk.

Also, many women lead extremely busy lives, working, shopping and ferrying children around, so it’s no wonder personal safety is low on their agendas.

This conference is further concerned that an increasing number of women members are expected to work alone without training and information on the dangers of driving alone, safe parking areas, the pros and cons of using central locking, and what to do if an emergency occurs

Conference welcomes UNISON guidance recently produced on safer driving at work and calls on the National Women’s Committee to work with the National Health and Safety Committee to update its guidance to include advice on:

1)Driving with vehicle unlocked;

2)Parking in quiet streets;

3)Waiting at road junctions and traffic lights;

4)The vehicle behind bumps into your car;

5)A stranger approaches you in a car park;

And

a)Encourage employers to produce workplace policies.
