Recruitment skills

Acquiring the skills for recruitment as a core activity for the union.

Details

The course will help you to:

  • build up the confidence to use a range of recruitment techniques;
  • identify barriers to recruiting and organising members and possible solutions to such barriers;
  • highlight daily workplace situations that will help you recruit new members.

The course includes a series of linked activities on:

  • why people join unions;
  • breaking through barriers to recruitment;
  • identifying recruitment opportunities;
  • recruiting and organising situations;
  • techniques for effective recruitment;
  • Why join a union? – an activity aimed at potential members.

How the course will work

The activity packs contain a worksheet and a tutor note explaining how each activity works, how much time it will take and what resources are needed.

The materials are designed in a modular format so that they can be used flexibly as stand alone activities in a number of settings.

For example, in members’ meetings, branch committees and as add on to organising courses. Some of the activities may also be used with potential members on recruitment events such as staff induction days.

Alternatively the activities are flexible enough to be combined and run as a half day or one day workshop for branch activists.
