1 May 2024
On Wednesday 1 May the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Stop the War and other organisations are requesting trade union branches in the UK to support a workplace day of action to end the war in Gaza.
The last six months have had a devastating impact on workers. In Gaza 490 health workers, 27 Palestinian Red Crescent workers and volunteers, 183 UN workers and many other public service workers have been killed. By the end of January some 507,000 jobs had been lost in the occupied Palestinian territory, including at least 66 percent of jobs in Gaza.
Palestinian trade unions are calling for an immediate ceasefire, access to humanitarian assistance and for the arms trade with Israel to be suspended. UNISON branches could support these calls on 1 May by:
- Holding a lunchtime photo action in support of a ceasefire.
- Writing to your local MP to encourage them to support UNISON’s calls.
- Encouraging members to take action in support of a ceasefire and suspension of the arms trade, through supporting Medical Aid for Palestinians and the Palestine Solidarity Campaign.
- Holding a meeting with a speaker from the Palestine Solidarity Campaign.
- Fundraising or donating to the UNISON appeal in support of the critical work of Medical Aid for Palestinians and the Red Cross in the occupied Palestinian Territory and Israel. Donate to aid efforts in Gaza and Israel.
