Background
It’s a crucial time for social housing with key policy developments and events including the Grenfell Tower fire tragedy all affecting the sector.
Government policies and cuts have led to the lowest number of new social rented homes since records began. With a less favourable policy environment, the traditional social mission of housing providers is being compromised.
All of this has impacted on housing budgets, hampering provider’s abilities to build new homes and maintain existing stock – with implications on the work load, jobs and conditions of housing workers.
The commercialisation of housing associations has also meant that (like private developers) much of their focus is now on building homes for sale and for profit.
Some treat their workers unfairly and refuse to recognise unions. These challenges have caused massive workplace stress and risks at work for UNISON members in housing.
