Holocaust Memorial Day 2021

Never forget, never again: be the light in the darkness, Image of a lit candle.

27 January 2021

Everywhere

Holocaust Memorial Day takes place every year on 27 January. This year, the theme is ‘Be the light in the darkness’.

It encourages everyone to reflect on the depths humanity can sink to, but also the ways individuals and communities resisted that darkness to ‘be the light’ before, during and after genocide.

Be the light in the darkness is an affirmation and a call to action for everyone marking HMD. This theme asks us to consider different kinds of ‘darkness’, for example, identity-based persecution, misinformation, denial of justice; and different ways of ‘being the light’, for example, resistance, acts of solidarity, rescue and illuminating mistruths.

We know that this event will be different this year, with many of you unable to commemorate within your branches as you normally would, but we hope you will be able to take part in some way.

The Holocaust Memorial Trust has produced free guides and resources (PDF) to help your workplace or UNISON branch organise events and activities around this theme.

And they’ve produced some specific ideas you can do with colleagues online.

We have also produced some social media graphics for you to use on your channels on or leading up to the day.
