Grade us right – Improving job evaluation for nurses and midwives

Job evaluation is central to ensuring NHS jobs are fairly graded and paid in an equal way. Yet too often, nurses and midwives are not having their work fairly recognised.

UNISON surveyed our nursing and midwifery family last year with many thousands answering. You told us that:

  • Clinical practice is regularly dramatically affected by poor staffing levels.
  • Nursing and midwifery work is becoming more complex. You’re regularly acting more autonomously; undertaking more complex care and interventions; and holding greater responsibility for supervising students and other staff.
  • The majority of you don’t have your job descriptions updated regularly. Most feel that your job description doesn’t accurately reflect your day to day practice; often significantly under-representing the complexity of your work.

UNISON is currently supporting the national NHS Job Evaluation Group (JEG) to review nursing and midwifery profiles to ensure they are fit for purpose. We are also launching campaigns in branches to organise nurses and midwives collectively to ensure you are graded right.

  • Join this seminar to hear from UNISON leaders and job evaluation experts.
  • Learn more about job evaluation and how nurses and midwives can make sure you are graded right.
  • Contribute your experiences and expertise to our campaign to get nurses and midwives graded right.
