Celebrating the contributions of the Windrush Generation: Parliamentary drop-in

17 July 2023 3:00pm–5:30pm

Room M, Portcullis House

Unfortunately, the event is now fully booked. Further briefings about UNISON’s campaigns related to Windrush and the ‘Hostile Environment’ will be available in future communications.

UNISON were proud to support Patrick Vernon’s campaign to establish “Windrush Day” on 22 June, to mark the contribution of Black communities, many of whom came to the UK as immigrants. The 22nd of June marks the day that the Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury Docks in 1948, carrying over a thousand passengers including more than 800 African Caribbean people.

This historic moment has come to stand as a symbol for the huge contribution that post-war immigrants made to the UK. It has always had a special meaning for UNISON. Workers from the Commonwealth not only helped build public services, they transformed our trade unions. The history of the Windrush generation is part of the history of UNISON. It’s why equality and a public service ethos that serves all communities is at the heart of everything UNISON does.

Windrush Day should be a day of celebration. Instead, the Windrush generation are still fighting for justice. UNISON’s campaign calls for implementing in full the recommendations of the ‘Lessons Learned’ Review, tackling the hostile environment and moving the Compensation Scheme from the Home Office’s jurisdiction.

Our drop-in on 17 July will hear from Yvette Cooper MP, Shadow Home Secretary, David Lammy MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, and Anneliese Dodds MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Women and Equalities.

We would be delighted if you could join us to celebrate the contributions of the Windrush generation, learn more about UNISON’s campaign and speak to those affected by the Windrush Scandal. Further briefings about UNISON’s campaigns related to Windrush and the ‘Hostile Environment’ will be available at the drop-in.
