Breaking the bank – A discussion of practicing as bank staff
More and more NHS staff are practicing through staff bank arrangements. Often this provides welcome flexibility and choice. But it can also mean that individuals miss out on sickness pay, proper overtime rates and the benefits of nationally negotiated agreements.
Many bank staff report that they feel left out, undervalued and don’t get the same access to training and development opportunities as their colleagues.
The availability of bank staff can also absolve employers from the need to resolve their underlying staff shortages. The UNISON nursing and midwifery sector is actively considering how to tackle these problems so that all NHS staff are valued and receive fair terms and conditions.
