Branch Secretary News May 2025 – UNISON College

Get a taste for learning at National Delegate Conference

With a number of motions related to learning and training on the agenda for National Delegate Conference, UNISON College will be there to talk about the power of union education. Our union is facing all sorts of challenges – UNISON College can equip you and your branch with the tools to face them. We’re looking forward to seeing you there.

We’ll be hosting a fringe meeting, This is us, this is our learning, at 12.45pm on Wednesday 18 June. Come and join us for lunch, hear UNISON members, activists, and branches share how our programmes have made a real difference to people’s lives at home and at work, and empowered them to get involved in their union, and discover how you can use learning in your organising.

Then come and chat with us at our real-life Learning Café in the Unizone on Thursday, and find out more about the huge range of learning and training that’s on offer for you, your activists, and your members.

See you in Liverpool!

Learning agreements

A learning agreement can unlock all sorts of doors – with the employer, with UNISON members, and with those who aren’t members yet. It can form a powerful part of an organising project or plan.

Join us online on 15 July for a 90 minute workshop to find out how to negotiate for a strong, effective learning agreement – and how to make the most of the one you might already have.

Setting up a branch mentoring scheme

Trained, confident UNISON activists are what makes the union the force for positive change in the workplace. But how can we equip our newly active members with those skills and confidence? Training is only the beginning of the story – with the support of a friendly, encouraging mentor, a freshly trained activist can put their new skills into practice and build their confidence as they go.

That’s great, but how does a branch begin to make that happen? Covering the theory behind a successful mentoring scheme and practical tips to get started, as well as an opportunity to plan for your own context, this half-day online workshop will help you get your mentoring scheme off the ground. Join us online on 23 July at 10am.
