About this job

With ever-growing demands for services and tight financial settlements, public services like schools, councils, care homes and health care are under constant pressure and reorganisation and the needs and views of workers can get overlooked.

UNISON members keep Londoners safe, well and supported every day.  Help us organise workers to speak up for themselves and the services we all depend on. Are you a people person with good listening and problem-solving skills? Do you possess the determination to make a difference to people’s lives? UNISON is looking for enthusiastic, flexible, and resourceful individuals to support organising projects in the Greater London Region.

The Greater London Region prides itself on its diverse membership. We aim to represent the entire public sector in our multicultural city. We support and encourage applications from underrepresented groups and those from Black, Asian and non-white backgrounds.  UNISON uses ‘Black’ in a broad, inclusive sense to describe people who face racism in the UK, including people of African, Caribbean, Asian, Arab and other heritage.

The Branch Support & Organising Fund Area Organiser is a new and exciting role designed to lead the union’s delivery of strategic organising projects across the region.  Initially, projects are likely to focus on health or social care initiatives.  Any future projects focussed on UNISON’s key priorities.

The role will focus principally upon developing and leading workplace organising campaigns in target sites as well as mentoring and supporting new activists, deploying resources flexibly and negotiating with employers as needed.

The successful candidate will bring their experience and skills in one-to-one communications, organising, project development and campaigning including team co-ordination and motivation. Previous experience as an organiser and campaigner within a trade union or community organisation would be desirable, although you may have transferrable skills. You will also need to demonstrate understanding of trade unionism and our union’s values.

A taster session will be run over Teams to give you more of a flavour of these roles and UNISON’s values so you can assess if you have transferrable skills on Monday 7 July 5.45 – 6.45. Register at Microsoft Virtual Events Powered by Teams

The successful candidates will need to be flexible with their working hours. Reaching members who work in these environments can be challenging during “office hours” so the successful candidate may be required to work in the evening, early mornings and occasionally at weekends. UNISON has a range of policies to support a healthy work/life balance. Our projects are delivered in workplaces across the whole region, so you will need to be able to travel in and around Greater London.

How to apply

To apply, please read the job description and person specification (under documents) and download and complete either the Area Organiser or Local Organiser application form (under ‘Resources’).  Please note that ONLY the Organiser application form will be accepted.  You will need to describe your experience with reference to the competencies set out in the person specification (under ‘Documents’).

Please send your completed application forms by emailing G@Unison.co.uk. Please ensure you quote the relevant job reference, R3/BSOF06T and R3/BSOF07T on the application form.

Completed application forms must be received by no later than 12 Noon on Tuesday 15 July 2025

Applications received after the deadline for any reason will not be accepted.

Interviews are likely to be on 29, 30 or 31 July.
