About this job

About this job

In these challenging times, protecting our members in public services and encouraging non-members to join a powerful collective voice is more critical than ever. Are you someone who excels in listening, problem-solving, and engaging with people? Do you have the determination to make a meaningful difference in others’ lives?

The Branch Support & Organising Fund Local Organiser is a new and exciting role designed to take Unison’s organising objectives forward across the region.

UNISON is looking for enthusiastic, flexible, and resourceful individuals to support the Greater London Region with a range of organising projects. The first projects will focus on organising and recruitment within NHS employers and social care.

The role will focus principally upon the recruitment and retention of members, as well as identifying new reps and campaigning to make a difference in the public sector.

The ideal candidate will possess strong skills in one-to-one communication, problem-solving, persuasion, perseverance, and self-motivation. While previous experience as a recruiter, organiser, or campaigner within a trade union or community organisation is desirable, transferrable skills are also highly valued. Candidates must demonstrate an understanding of our union’s values and objectives.

The successful candidates will need to be flexible with their working hours. Reaching members who work in these environments can be challenging during “office hours” so the successful candidate may be required to work in the evening, early mornings and occasionally at weekends. UNISON has a range of policies to support a healthy work/life balance.

The successful candidate will bring their experience and skills in one-to-one communications, recruitment, organising and campaigning.

You will need to be able to travel in and around Greater London.

The Greater London Region prides itself on its diverse membership. In 2023, we celebrated the Year of the Black Worker, and in 2024, UNISON’s priority is the Year of the LGBT+ Worker campaign. We aim to represent the entire public sector in our multicultural city and welcome applications from all backgrounds. This ensures our union truly reflects our members, the community, and public sector workers, reaching those who need us most.

We support and encourage applications from Black, Asian and other backgrounds, if you want to find out more, why not come along to our online drop-in session to find out about the role and hear what a typical day looks like in the life of a UNISON Organiser, on:

  • Thursday 9 January  | 17:45 – 18:45 | online via Microsoft Teams – https://events.teams.microsoft.com/event/ae25c80d-9f49-4a96-8941-767bb631522c@d7c21edf-d541-49a4-9f5a-7737832d42c7
