About this job

About this job:

UNISON is the UK’s leading public sector trade union with more than 1.3 million members, working in the public services. Our members provide the essential services and utilities we all depend on and as their chosen trade union, UNISON tirelessly campaigns for improved terms and conditions and better pay for all public service workers.

There has never been such an exciting time to be a trade union organiser.  UNISON members across the Eastern region are fighting for better pay and fairer, safer workplaces.  With the support of UNISON organisers these members are winning their campaigns.  UNISON is the largest trade union and our Eastern region has the fastest growing membership supported by inspiring activists.

We are looking for three new organisers to work in long term projects recruiting new members, motivating them to take an active role in our campaigns, and identifying new activists.  Until the end of 2025, these projects will be in schools.    Working with school support staff and members in contracted services you will develop and maintain a strong, functional and effective union in their workplaces. You will build member participation with an escalating plan to achieve a specific win, while building organising into our members everyday activity and working. This will be planned, resourced and targeted campaigning with empowered, trained and active members you’ve inspired and motivated, front and centre.

The successful candidates will bring their experience and skills in one-to-one communications, recruitment, organising and campaigning. Previous experience within a trade union or community organisation is desirable but not essential.   You will also need to demonstrate and knowledge of trade unionism and our union’s values.

You will have the right blend of intelligence, passion and people skills.

The successful candidate will need to be flexible with their working hours and be prepared to travel across the Eastern Region (Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex). You will be based at one of our regional offices in Bury St Edmunds or Chelmsford. You may also be required to travel to our Head Office in London for training.

If you have a passion for fairness, equality, trade unionism and workers’ rights; if you think you’ve got what it takes to work in a dynamic team, helping to recruit members, develop the next generation of leaders and activists to deliver winning campaigns then this might the job for you.
