About this job
You will preferably have knowledge of civil litigation, personal injury law, contentious or non-contentious commercial law and intellectual property law. Knowledge of one or more of the following is desirable but not essential – data protection, contract, trade union and employment law.
You will be able to work as an effective member of the team, organise caseloads efficiently, be proficient in IT, particularly working with data and spreadsheets and be confident and enthusiastic
You will be required to think on your feet, assist with litigation, assist with advice to the Union’s officials, advise members who may sometimes be distressed. Under supervision, you will provide concise written and verbal legal advice, draft reports, statistics and briefings to the Union and staff at all levels of the Union, including HR. You will need to speak effectively on complex legal issues when communicating advice and delivering internal and external talks on relevant law.
UNISON Legal Services is a department that covers a diverse range of legal issues. Legal services manages the provision of all the Union’s legal services including the external legal advice scheme that provides a comprehensive suite of legal services to members. Legal services also conduct strategically important and often ground breaking employment litigation on behalf of the Union and its members: successful cases run in-house include the challenge to the imposition of Employment Tribunal fees in the Supreme Court, Haripur Trust v Brazel & UNISON at the Supreme Court and Lock v British Gas in the ECJ.
