About this job

We are looking for a new Head of Staff Learning & Development, who will be primarily responsible for developing a training strategy, implementing best training practice and standardising training processes and procedures as well as being hands on in delivering learning & development programmes. The successful candidate will:

  • Own the training agenda for UNISON staff ensuring operational, technical and skill learning is fit for purpose and aligned to the strategy and objectives of the organisation to ensure we have an environment which encourages and supports growth and development
  • Ensure that regulatory learning initiatives are delivered and are supported and embedded across the organisation
  • Define overall training framework, providing clarity to the organisation on how the designed learning will meet their expectations, and be measured.
  • Develop and facilitate training programs for employees, managers and senior managers, in line with the needs of the organisation, along with updating material following feedback and identify trends.
  • Assess the learning and development needs for the organisation, helping individuals and groups develop skills and knowledge, creating training manuals, present in-person training sessions, and monitor the training for effectiveness.

The ideal candidate must:

  • Enthusiastic team player with strong relationship and empathy building skills who is capable of supporting change across a diverse range of relationships.
  • Relevant experience in a learning and development leadership role.
  • Good understanding of training practice and learning psychology in a large organisation environment which is geographically dispersed.
  • Experience of leading and developing a high-performance function.
  • Experience in delivery of projects and change initiatives.

As a key member of the HR team, you will be a supportive and active team player who advocates for best practice across the organisation and role models inspirational leadership behaviours.

Job Requirements:

  • Able to travel, as this role is supports staff across the organisation.
  • Professional manner and the ability to clearly and confidently speak in front of a large group of people.
  • Flexible to work full-time over 5 days (35hrs per week; however the nature of the job responsibilities may require flexible hours, including some evening and weekend working.
  • Experience and confidence in using a desktop computer and programmes such as Outlook, Powerpoint, Excel and Word.
  • Extensive, highly developed specialist knowledge in organisational and learning and development gained in an HR & L&D function
  • Educated to MCIPD or relevant masters level qualification or relevant experience.
  • Accredited award in Coaching and/or Action learning
  • High quality relationship management, influencing, facilitation and presentation skills.
  • Highly organized and able to manage a broad portfolio of activities
  • High quality personal governance and commitment to organisational values.
