About this job

This is a varied and responsible role which includes:

  • processing complaints about the union;
  • coordinating local ballots for industrial action;
  • processing subject access requests under the data protection legislation.

Primarily you will be a skilled administrator with good written communication skills. Full training will be given on aspects of the law which cover this work.

You must be able to plan your work so that you can meet various deadlines required of the union by law. You will not be thrown off course if your priorities have to change during the day.

Your administrative skills will be excellent. You will understand the need to keep accurate records. You will have excellent attention to detail. You will not be put off by bulky files and will recognise that dealing with case files often involves you doing lots of photocopying.

You will be confident in using Microsoft software products especially Office and Outlook.  You will be keen to learn to use UNISON’s own in house computer systems as well as Microsoft SharePoint.

You must be able to communicate clearly by telephone. In particular you must be confident, calm and professional in dealing with callers who have a complaint and who may be angry or distressed.

You will be able digest large amounts of written information; and write clear concise emails and letters to a wide audience, including members, senior managers and external bodies.
