About this job

We’re looking for one inspirational leader to guide two of our key communications teams—the design/corporate identity team and our campaigns team. You will have well-developed professional skills and experience as well as a real flair for people management and an inspiring approach to team development.

You will have skills and considerable experience in EITHER the field of graphic design and how it can enhance campaigns and communications OR as a dynamic campaigner and campaign planner working for a campaigning organisation.

Whichever discipline is your professional base, as a manager and leader you need to be able to advocate for each field, understand the needs of your teams, support their professional development and promote their contribution to the union’s communications.

UNISON’s communications team strives to produce the best quality publicity materials, information and campaigns for our 1.3million members and to engage the wider public in our campaigns for change.

We are a multi-skilled department organised into four teams – digital, editorial, campaigns and design.

Our campaigns team and design team have always worked together closely but until now they have been managed separately. Now we are bringing the management of the two teams together in one leader who can think across the two areas of work. We hope you’ll appreciate both their synergies and their distinctiveness and be able to adapt your management style to bring out the best in both teams.

We’re looking for an excellent communicator and advocate who can win support for their own and their teams’ ideas. You’ll be able to demonstrate your passion for developing great communications to inspire change. You’ll understand the union’s objectives and goals and see how strong communications can engage members, make the case for change and support our campaigns.

You’ll provide expertise, energy, ideas and leadership to communications and other staff around campaigns and design development. You’ll have a positive approach to change management and a track record in leading innovative projects. As part of the Communications Unit’s management team, you’ll provide expert advice and leadership and contribute to the team’s strategy development and planning.
