UNISON is seeking to recruit a permanent National Officer to be the lead officer for UNISON’s Water, Environment and Transport Service Group (WET). The WET service group covers members in water companies, the Environment Agency, and transport members in passenger transport executives (PTE’s), combined authorities, bus companies and airports.

About this job

The National Officer’s role is to: act as the secretary to the national WET service Group Executive; provide strategic leadership on recruitment and organising strategies; lead national collective bargaining, and conduct negotiations with employers, working in partnership with lay activists; co-ordinate and support bargaining that is conducted at other levels of the union within WET; provide policy advice and guidance to the union; provide leadership, support and guidance to national committees, regions and branches; research and write policy papers; represent the union with outside organisations; deal with the media.

Your work will help shape our organisation at many levels, including leadership support across our regions and branches. Your influence won’t end there, as you’ll also negotiate with national employers, initiate, organise and undertake campaign activities and you’ll have a positive impact on areas as diverse as recruitment and retention, research and European initiatives.

You will need to demonstrate trade union recruitment, organising and bargaining knowledge and experience. You will be able to prioritise and organise your work effectively. You will have strong research and analytical skills and be able to interpret and present financial and statistical data. You will have excellent written and oral communication skills and will be able to use these to write reports, bulletins and newsletters, to make presentations to committees and large and small audiences and to be proficient in dealing with the media.
Travel across the UK with occasional overnight stays will be required.
