The national pay deal and modernising pay agreement

The 2008/09 national pay deal
Every year the unions negotiate with the Association of Colleges (AoC) the recommended pay increase for FE college staff in England. This pay recommendation sets what should be the minimum pay increase awarded in every college.

The recommended pay increase for 2008/09 was a 3.2% increase on all salaries and allowances from 1 October 2008 or £550 – whichever is the greater. So if a 3.2% increase gave you less than £550 increase you should have got a flat £550 increase instead.

The modernising pay agreement
In 2004 the trade unions and the Association of Colleges signed an agreement calling on all colleges in England to introduce a new national pay scale. This national pay scale increased staff salaries across the board and introduced a much higher minimum rate of pay. The minimum hourly rate on the national pay scale is now £6.91 an hour.
